Terence McKenna’s Final Earthbound Interview
John Hazard
In this last video interview before his untimely death, Terence McKenna describes Novelty Theory to director John Hazard with an elaboration of its core principles involving hyper-complexification and the compression of Time. He holds forth on the correspondences between the structure of the DNA molecule and the Chinese I-Ching, then shows how his notion of an Archaic Revival leads from the theories of mind and the art movements of the early 20th century to the Shaman as the quintessential figure of the 21st century, with psychedelic substances being the bridge between these worldviews.
By way of explaining why he’s finally releasing this footage, Director John Hazard has the following to say:
“On meeting Terence: I had just finished shooting a film which profiled George Wallace for American Experience, and I was looking for a subject for a film that I might make that would engage me in a compelling way. I stumbled upon Terence and Novelty Theory, and I liked the correspondences between his work and the Mayan calendar.
Terence agreed to work with me, and I went to his home on the Big Island of Hawaii to conduct what I assumed would be the first of several interviews. We were just beginning to work together when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
I’ve always believed that my interview with Terence worked especially well as a long form conversation, because of his gifted way with language. When Jeremy Narby began his ‘Awakening the Cosmic Serpent’ Evolver Intensives sessions, I was struck by how engaging his long form interviews were, and I noticed how week after week his guests would tell a story about Terence. I’m inspired to release this interview on Reality Sandwich within the context of Jeremy’s Evolver Intensives.
With the psychedelic movement undergoing a renaissance, many in the new generation, the core participants who are finding their way to the Evolver/RS nexus, were children when Terence conducted his interview with me. I think this audience may consider his remarks to be prescient.”
He is so bright and so articulate. I want to believe in some of the things he believes, but it’s hard. Some trip experiences are profound, but many can be misleading. Regardless, everything he says makes me think interesting, new thoughts, and I feel wiser just for listening to him and turning his thoughts around in my head.
His greatness, as you said, comes from his amazing articulation. Surely, he is expressing what he feels and understands in a very profound manner, but what is unspeakable stays unspeakable. Could it be that our own personality and comprehensions affect these trips and define the speakable and the unspeakable, respectively the things we are ready to experience and those that we are not, even though any of them might happen?
This interview is spiritual food and I am nourished by the knowledge shared!!! Thank you for posting!
My conceptualization of these concepts are limited but they touch on the many weird thoughts and connections I have wondered about for years — methinks I need to understand the concepts through more study.
love to learn more
would realy love to learn more……
I have come across this interview purely by chance, unless the state of hyper complexity has some purpose, and I have been completely knocked sideways. Four years ago I was writing a concept for a computer game and I wanted to have within the game an oracle. I wanted the system to work as a random generator, similar to the roll of a dice, but give the impression of actually working. I thought it would have a strong effect on the gamer. I stumbled upon the “I Ching” and de-constructed it turning it into a purely mathematical function. I created a binarial structure giving different values to the trigrams and hexagrams. Strangely the system still worked. I discover this interview and find direct correlation between Terence McKenna’s findings and my own.
I’ve never really appreciated TK’s genius until seeing this interview. Thanks for posting this.
Please give us more John. Terrence is missed and well remembered now some 15 years since his passing. You captured Terence before his passing and this is the culmination of his thinking. He was an oracle in some ways bringing us the intelligence of the interrelatedness of humans, all planetary eco-systems and cosmology. We are ONE. We are INDIVISIBLE from the whole. Hence, All my relations…it is about all of us making up life – it is current strong theory, yes in native language – it is all my relations.
All I can say to this film is WOW!! It is a life changing clip.
I was trying to watch the video but it stopped about 10 minutes into the video. Could not get it to start again unfortunately. I will try to watch it again in a couple days.
Sigh, I wish I’d known you’d conducted this interview when we had dinner the other evening…..so many questions. So much agreement in theory….your questions suggest you have a firm grasp on his work. NOW we gotta work together again and next time it’s YOUR turn to turn the conversation.
Someone, somewhere said that to best “get” Terence, is to realize that he’s first and foremost a poet, dynamic speaker, and crusader for new, alternative thinking; he is a scientist and even philosopher after those things. And, once I heard that, Terence made more sense. He made me want to do my own research and not rely on his ranting!
thanks for posting this!!
The audio was perfect, especially for a field recording. My compliments to the recordist.
By the way I could listen to Terence for days!
one of the best videos of him!
thank you so much. and it really makes me happy to see that other people appreciate his wisdom like i do.
What a shame we could never see a debate between Terence and Richard Dawkins now – that would be intellectually stimulating, on both sides. P.
